However, it's been a number of years, since we have had good French pastries. Having a tried a few here and there in the last four years, I think we kind of gave up on finding bakeries that were the real deal.

So we already were coming into Trompeau Bakery with low expectations. Tack on the fact that we stumbled in 10 minutes before they close and you're really setting the bar low with the absolute worst conditions for trying out pastries.

So imagine our surprise when we found these pastries to be absolutely wonderful.

Croque monsier
White bread about an inch thick, but very light. Ham, gruyere and a nice creamy bechemel sauce, grilled. Lovely flavor, particularly that bechemel, all with with a nice crunch on the outside.

Savory friand
Filled with pork that has been marinated in white wine, garlic and I believe leeks(?). Light, flavorful, perhaps a touch on the greasy side, but the filling itself is worth it.

Chocolatine
With it being so late in the day, it's not fair at all to judge the actual texture of the croissant. But a good choice of delicious and not overly-sweet chocolate is always a good sign.

Rosemary bread
Marvelous. Wonderfully fragrant. I think we demolished the entire loaf within the day.

We briefly talked with the owner while there and she mentioned that they had moved to this location because they were running out of space in their original location. This location certainly had a good amount of space, particularly for their kitchen and baking area. Unfortunately, for us, it's a good drive away from where we live. Besides that, however, there's not really much to complain about Trompeau Bakery.

P.S. If you're an observant reader and were wondering, yes, the photos were taken from the inside of a car. As I mentioned, we got to the bakery 10 minutes before closing, so we decided to eat our goodies sitting inside our car at a nearby parking lot like hooligan foodies.

There is a healthy number of taquerias in Longmont, and
all of the ones we have tried have ranged from decent to pretty good. However, the tacos at La Panda have just stood out from the crowd, and we have
since found a few other offerings that we're fond of too.

I'm guessing La Panda is short for Panaderia (bakery), which took me way too long to come to that conclusion. They do have a selection of various buns and cookies, which are located out of frame in the following picture (helpful me, I know). But in fairness to me, the photo does show the freezer with the ice cream, which we actually enjoyed more than the baked goods that we've tried.

They have a number of choices for meat. Just to name the ones I remember: carnitas (braised pork), carne asada (grilled beef), barbacoa (beef cheeks), salsa verde, pollo, milanesa (breaded pork), lengua (tongue), tripas (intestines), buche (pork stomach) ... and I know I'm leaving off a few.

In general, we tend to be nightmare taqueria customers on our first visit, since we like to do a "variety pack" order in order to try out as many types of meats as we can.

However, on our successive visits, we've continued to do this, since they just do an outstanding job with their meats. Each is cooked well and more impressively, has its own distinct flavor and texture. For example, the carnitas has a more pure flavor, tasting like and with a texture of pork, slow-cooked with some salt, while the barbacoa tastes like it has been more marinated in a chile sauce and cooked until it has a toothier texture.

I should note that they do *not* have a salsa bar (at least at the original location), but they do serve a salsa with their complimentary tortilla chips. They seem to switch between two different salsas, both of which we've been more than happy with.

Menudo
My SO is a big fan of menudos and La Panda offers it on the weekends. Personally, menudos can be more hit or miss - sometimes the texture of the tripe can be a little much for me.

With that said, we both enjoy the menudo here. Their tripe has a texture of a chunks of beef if they had a good portion of tendon/fat attached to them. The flavor of the soup is really the attention-getter, though: just a great mix of flavors of slightly smokey chiles and beef stock.

Caldo de Pescado
We are also big fans of their fish soup, so much so that we've tried looking up recipes to see if we can to make some on our own. The soup has a nice rich flavor, melding the individual flavors of the vegetables together with a unique tang to it as well.

Smothered Burrito
Yes, it looks like your standard burrito that you get at an Americanized Mexican joint, but a few things distinguish it from those: 1) there's not as much heavy filler in the burrito itself, just your chosen meat (which as mentioned above with the tacos, I'm a big fan of), 2) the green chile salsa is fresh, on the more viscous side and has a kick, so cuts through the heaviness and 3) the sour cream is not your usually super heavy stuff.

With that being said, it is a fairly large portion, so while I recommend it based on the taste alone, do note that it's probably best for when you're got a healthy appetite.

Flautas - Carnitas
Your desired meat, rolled up tightly in a
tortilla, deep-fried and topped with sour cream, tomatoes and lettuce. Also recommended as well.
Breakfast burrito - Chorizo, potatoes & eggs
I have no picture - we ate these too quickly - but I would be remiss if I didn't mention their breakfast burritos. Delicious, with the ingredients being nicely tied together by their salsa.

Ice Cream
Last, but certainly not least, are the ice cream pops that they have. They serve two local brands of ice cream: Paleteria Americas in Fort Collins and La Michoacana in Longmont.

We've only tried the Paleteria Americas ones, mainly because we've been scared off by the artificial sounding ingredients in the other brand. We're also pretty particular about the flavors of Paleteria Americas ice cream that we do try now, after we tried their gooseberry flavor and it was so ick-sweet that we simply couldn't finish.

However, the flavors that we do like, we *really* like. In particular, we're fans of the nuez (pecan), piñon (pine nuts), and the chocolate. The nuez and the pinon each have a nice creamy mouth-feel, reminding me a little of the red-bean ice cream pops found in Asian grocery stores. Both have plenty of their respective nuts in them, so flavor-wise, each has a nice pairing of creaminess and the flavor of the nuts. The chocolate flavor can be best described as a fudgcicle, with actually decent chocolate and cream in it.
While I can't say that this is destination restaurant that you drive specifically to eat it, it is one of those places that if you're in the area, it's more than worth your time to check out or if you live in the area, hit up on a regular basis.

Sound like a bizarre combination, right? But somehow it works. And eating here, just makes me reminisce for some of the places in Mexico.

Hot dogs w/ everything
The hot dogs are wrapped in bacon and grilled. The "everything" includes: beans, tomatoes, shredded cheese, mustard, ketchup and cream cheese (?). I am definitely not one of the "bacon makes everything better" fanatics, but here the bacon works, adding a nice crunchy texture. The rest of the ingredients are what gives this most of its flavor and are satisfying in a American casserole/comfort-food type manner. These hot dogs are filling, which I always seem to forget when ordering our tacos.

Tacos
I've heard some Spanish-speaking folk get a choice for what meat they'd like, but I believe we just got carne asada. The tortillas a fresh and lightly grilled and the meat is flavorful. Together with fresh onions, cilantro and salsas from the salsa bar, you've got a winning combination.

El Pollote has taken the top spot for my favorite restaurant in Longmont. Yes, their menu solely revolves around chicken, and each meal all have the same sides. But, man alive, literally everything that comes on the tray, they do well, from the chicken to their tortillas to their tasty refried beans.

Flautas
A gentleman started talking with us about the food here, and he said that every time he came here, he just couldn't resist the callings of the flautas. So I had to try them. And now I get it.

They came out piping hot, freshly deep-fried. The chicken was nice, hot and juicy with a touch of delicious chicken oil. The tortillas are deep-fried; however, unlike the crunchy tortilla chip texture that one might expect at more Americanized Mexican places, these tortillas had more of a toothy give to them, which I was a fan of, my SO not so much. Lastly, there was this subtle flavor that reminded me of white pepper that gave the flautas a little something extra extra.

Tacos

We also finally tried the tacos. And they are outstanding, topping even the flautas. It's interesting that they top with lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese - I'm not really sure that you really taste that at all, because your attention just gets drawn to the delicious chicken and tortillas.

---
Sometimes, when my SO and I walked around 9th and Main in Longmont, we would sometimes smell something delicious being grilled. And we would wander about, trying to Toucan-Sam smell our way to the source, but we were never able to determine what was producing the wonderful smell.

One evening, we had a hankering for tacos and decided to walk into the Carniceria Las Cazuelas, thinking they had some.

When we asked about food, they pointed us towards the back of the store, which is actually El Pollote, a small restaurant, specializing in grilled chicken.
Half-chicken meal

Its evident that the grill has been used a lot. You've got wonderful depth of flavor in the char on the chicken (think of the flavors you get from the patina of woks, cast-iron pans.) And the chicken was cooked just right, not over-cooked nor dried out.
Needless to say, Estes Park is largely sustained on the tourism industry and generally speaking, that generally translates to restaurants not having too much incentive to go above and beyond putting out the bare minimum.

As if to prove the point, the last time we ate in Estes Park, we had a truly, truly awful dining experience at another Asian restaurant. Sorry, I have no writeup for that, but we will certainly never be returning.

I mention the above to explain that we generally avoid eating in Estes Park. However, we had just done a longer hike and my S/O was hangry and threatened to beat me with my own leg and deprive me of delicious chocolate chip cookies.

So we pulled in the parking lot of Thai Kitchen with low expectations.

It's always nice to be proven wrong.

Kratiem (w/ tofu) - Slice sautéed chicken / pork or tofu with garlic, black pepper, broccoli, snow peas, and carrots - Freshly fried battered tofu with a light crispness to the exterior. The rest of the vegetables were nicely pan fried, and everything was covered with a light thickened sauce, tasting primarily of fried garlic. Relatively straightforward, but nicely and refreshingly done.

Vegetable Korma - Fresh mixed vegetable gently cooked in cream sauce and sprinkled with nuts and raisins - Cauliflower, potato, almond slivers, raisins. The korma had a nice, creamy coconut milk flavor with a few other spices thrown in. Also nicely done and not too heavy either.

Pistachio Kulfi Ice Cream (Indian Style) - Home made ice-cream made to an authentic recipe. - To top off the nicely done entrees, this was the pièce de résistance. Plenty of pistachio chunks, so a strong pistachio flavor. The taste initially tastes as if it will be too sweet, but then the sweetness tapers off and disappears. The texture is much firmer than that of traditional ice cream or gelato, such that you have to dig in with your spoon to get a bite and hold on with your finger so the whole thing doesn't go flying. But certainly a nice ending to a satisfying meal.

I'll also note that the service was friendly. I believe we were served by one of the owners of the place and she was friendly and enthusiastic.

If we find other restaurants like this, I may have to rethink my generalization that tourist towns are devoid of decent restaurants.
My SO and I have recently discovered that Jacques Pépin's and Julia Child's PBS cooking show, Julia & Jacque Cooking at Home is streaming on Hulu. It's not only undeniably clear how knowledgeable and skilled both personalities are/were in the kitchen (I mean watch how effortlessly Jacques debones a chicken), but it's also incredibly endearing seeing what good friends these two were.

It's also so very refreshing to see personalities on TV have honest reactions to tasting food. So, so much better than the polished, over-edited reactions on any food TV show today.

And you can believe we'll be making our way through Jacque's solo show, Jacque Pépin: More Fast Food My Way, available on youtube.Comradechuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02375373770823469366noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10074246.post-53355649103102999502014-02-01T14:22:00.004-07:002020-08-25T15:24:36.838-06:00Bella's Best : AtlantaIt's been awhile since I've had a proper post and my SO and I have since moved away from Atlanta; however, I was surprised to see I hadn't posted about one of my favorite bakeries in Atlanta.

I've previously posted about F.A.R.M., the farmer's market in Smyrna, which we loved. Bella's Best was one of the stands that attended and each week, like a moth drawn to the flame, I would inevitably be drawn to their booth. Over time, my SO and I tried their strucla and their breads, which were quite good, but given my past history with cookies (yeah, okay, maybe obsession is a better word), I would always manage to sneak-in a purchase of one of their delicious cookies.

Over time, we built up a bit of a rapport and when I approached, I would amusingly hear "oh no, here he comes for more cookies!" I would somewhat sheepishly smile, but then go about figuring out which cookie I wanted for the week.

For my birthday, my SO ended up calling them and ordering a platter of a dozen 3" cookies as a gift. When my birthday rolled around, my SO came down with the flu, so I ended up picking them up myself. Once they saw who the cookies had been order for, they started good-heartedly laughing.

And yes, I ended up finishing the whole platter, thank you very much.

Pictured, from front to back, are the peanut butter cookies, ginger cookies, oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip. I would be happy eating any of the cookies, particularly now since I haven't eaten one in quite some time, but my favorite somewhat surprisingly was the ginger cookie, which was just bursting with the flavor of real ginger and had this delightful bendy, chewy texture - this was by far the best of any ginger cookies I've ever had then and now.

So if you get a chance to stop by the FARM farmer's market or any of the other markets they attend, I'd highly recommend you stop by and try out some of their delicious baked goods.

I also don't understand why people consider ramen a convenience food. With all of the preparation and slow motions, it takes hours to cook and enjoy. ;-)
Antico Pizza has grown on both of us and it currently stands as our favorite pizza place of Atlanta.

Not a great photo by any means, but you order from this counter. They have a few bar seats up front, but the more interesting (and dare I say very Atlantan) dining experience is the communal seating in the back. It's stainless steel picnic tables, where you can enjoy sitting elbow to elbow with fellow friendly diners and also watch some pizza creation as well.

Margherita
Unpictured. But this is our go-to pizza. San Marzano tomatoes, balls of Mozzarella, basil leaves and garlic. A thin crust that has flavor, has a bit of chewiness and really has to be folded or it flops over. Simple ingredients, but good stuff.

Capricciosa
Not bad. Pretty much margherita with white mushrooms and prosciutto. Decent, but the prosciutto just doesn't taste like the stuff we had in Italy.

Pistacchio dessert
Nice pistachio flavor, but just remember thinking to stick with just the pizza next time.

Cannoli w/ Ricotta
Nice that they freshly squeeze the filling for you. Decent version, which will do if you've got a hankering for a cannoli.

Local Three is run by the same folk as Muss & Turner and another local chef, Chris Hall, so we were looking forward to it.

And it's bit of a confusing place to find. It's located in the plaza opposite to the Northside library. Turn right, go all the way down and turn right into the parking garage. Drive up one level, then take the elevator down to the ground floor.

Go around the guard desk,

past the elevators and hang a left at the hallway for the restrooms.

At the end of the hallway will be a somewhat bewildering door. If the sign wasn't there, I'd think it'd be like a speakeasy.

Once you get there, the interior is quite open and lovely.

Brunch is buffet style, where you wander through the kitchen picking up various goodies (similar to, but more straightforward than the brunch at Lacroix in Philadelphia.) They, somewhat ironically given the work it takes to get there, give you a map for brunch.

French toast
Quite solid stuff, topped with marscapone, which cut right through the syrup.

Fruit
Okay. What could have passed for your standard hotel fruit salad.

Potatoes
Also somewhat standard. Slightly oversalted.

Flat bread
Cheese w/ pimiento

Scrambled eggs
With chives, black pepper. Slightly over-salted, but nice cooking.

Bacon
Crispy delish bacon.

Grits

Trout
Lovely stuff. The underlying brussel sprouts and chinese vegetable (Bok choy?) seemed to have been cooked in some sort of (yummy) fat. Lovely rich complement to the lighter fish.

Yogurt and granola
Love the yogurt, reminding me of the tartness/thickness of Fage yogurt. Topped with a thin layer of honey and the granola had been toasted with some brown sugar. One of our favorites.

Chicken pot pie
Wonderful stuff. I think heavier on the darker meat, making for a homier than usual flavor.

Round roast
Tender. Optionally toped with tartar sauce. Both good with or without

Peanut butter cookie
Tasting similar to the peanut butter cookie at Muss & Turner's, so good stuff. (We later found out, they're the baker makes them for both restaurants)

Chocolate mousse cake
Pleasantly surprised by this. Mousse slightly thicker than the light stuff that I hold as my standard at Artisan, but still quite good, a nice long rich milk chocolate flavor that both of us enjoyed.

Butternet squash soup
So very tasty. Seemed to have be heavy proportioned on the cream, but damn is it tasty.

Muffins
Nothing that memorable

Sausage
Flavorful and juicy, but not overly oily inside.

Overall, the food was quite nicely done. It was consistently delicious, respectful and understanding of the qualities of each ingredient.

---

We also came for dinner a months or so later.

We had to wait a few minutes for our table, so sprung for a few drinks:

Sangria
Not that sweet at all, which is refreshing - Like you can actually taste the fruit and wine.

Julep
Pinkish hue and the straw make me feel like it's a girly drink. but they certainly do not hide the bourbon. Not sweet per se, but it has a more rounded front-end to it. Still not sure I really like cocktails

On to dinner. We dug the salt and pepper shakers at each table, which looked like someone had gone hunting at various antique shops.

Charcutterie plate
Good range of flavors. In particular the rabbit was interesting - big fatty pockets and a bit tougher in texture than other two. The accompanying sauces caught our attention too: The violet mustard had a nice tang to it. It looks like I was confused by the other sauce. My notes say: "sort of a mashed up pork, tasting like scallions - not stringy, but not quite mushy either."

Wood Oven Roasted Springer Mountain Chicken - Brown Butter Sweet Potatoes, Leeks, Huckleberry Sauce
Superb. I kept on looking back at the menu, because the meat seemed too moist to have been oven-roasted, particularly the chicken breast. The accompanying sweet potato had this nice rich, prolonged flavor to it that paired very nicely with the leeks.
"The Big Daddy" - Bone-in Gum Creek Farms Pork Chop, Sweet Potato, Huckleberry
Really quite a pleasure. Our waiter, Michael, mentioned if you like the flavor of pork, this just fills your mouth with that flavor and that was quite an accurate description. My fiancee looked up at me and said it was like taking a bite out of a pig. Particularly the parts with the fat were just outright delicious. The slightly sweet/tart toppings of huckleberry, which tasted like blueberries in a blueberry pie, together with the superbly chosen pistachios, paired well with the pork, helping cut through the fattyness. And the accompanying vegetables also helped as well, tasting very similar to an Asian vegetable stir-fry (was a bit of soy sauce in the sauce?).

Strawberry curds
Also not as sweet, something we can appreciate. Not really sure I think the "crust" works as well as it could with the strawberry and curds, but certainly solid dessert.

All in all, our dinner here was wonderful (and we ended up much preferring the dinner to their brunch). Given that we live closer to Muss & Turner's, I'm not sure when we'll return to Local Three, but certainly I have no problem whatsoever, recommending Local Three for dinner or brunch.
BBQ Chicken panini
Bbq chicken is your somewhat standard bbq, but admittedly decently offset by the slaw, which cut through the thickness of the bbq sauce.
Chicken Salad
Salad had fresh vegetables, but really was quite ruined by the curried chicken salad. The curry chicken salad just tasting like the cheap curry powder available in supermarkets. Just felt like it was the equivalent of Ikea for food. Except the food wasn't that cheap.
Peach pastry

Triple Chocolate Pecan Cookie
Veers more on the overly sweet side than not, with brown sugar of the batter strangely dominating the initial flavor. Chocolate chunks and white chocolate supplying some mid-range sweetness, followed by the batter and pecan, helping to offset the sweetness.

We were in the area, checking out Scott's Antique market (we weren't so thrilled about) and decided to try out Pupuseria, since it was close by.

Tacos
Decent. The fresh tortillas were probably the best part. They tasted like the daily made tortillas available at grocery stores (such as Buford Highway Farmer's Market), but were fresh nonetheless. The meat was okay. At times, I encountered a crunch in the meat, which I was unsure was purposeful or just overcooking certain pieces.

Chicken Mole
Okay. The sauce was just overwhelmed by the ancho chile, both in flavor and strangely in texture: the sauce was came off as dry. The chicken was pretty decently cooked however.

Pupusa
Nicely cooked. But even with the sauce, the flavor came off more as a staple side, like rice or bread.

This certainly was not bad for just being in the area and randomly stopping by, but I'm not sure I would return.

My better half had previously eaten at Restaurant Eugene and was excited to eat there together with me. I was excited to see her excited about a fine-dining restaurant in Atlanta, so was looking forward to the meal.

We both did their prix fixe menu.

Kumomoto oysters (Amuse Bouche)
Refreshing because of the ice cold temperature and the toppings on top of the oyster. The toppings really contributed most of the flavor, with a tiny hint of the brininess of the actual oyster.

Cured trout tartare
Ginger, cracker bits, parsley sauce - bits of fish that remind me of a delicate risotto due to their size. Very strong fishy flavor. I think the variety of flavors that the chef could pack into a single dish was becoming evident. I particularly liked the contrast of the parsley flavor, which gave a wider (for lack of a better description) flavor, against the sharper, more pointed fish flavor.

Shrimp risotto
A unique jelly-like substance covered the risotto, adding a somewhat neutralizing texture to things. Nicely cooked shrimp, risotto almost with a flavor of a beef or chicken stock. Dehydrated shrimp that was fried, causing them to pop - tastes like something in between the Chinese shrimp chips, Bugles and pork rinds.

Monk Fish
A really interesting sauce - like a complex fish paste, with bits of vegetable chunks, mussels, oysters and other seafood. Very seafood-intense like some Thai fish sauces. Liked the crusting on the monk fish - the monk fish itself decent - not quite used to the more chewy texture of monk fish.

Rib-eye
Found the pork jus they poured on it to be slightly overly salty. But again a complex palette of flavors going on. Sweet potato puree. Slivers of potatoes nicely cooked. Kale, that undercut the saltiness and was actually quite delicious in that respect. Not quite as much of a fan of the deep-fried onions on top, which were essentially onion rings.

Cheese plate
- Holy smokes, the kid gloves are off. Kudos to restaurant Eugene for serving up a cheese that was stinky and extremely strong and intense in flavor. I personally can't say that this cheese was my favorite, but I applaud Restaurant Eugene for serving cheese that is not neutered down for popular consumption.
- Other things on the plate: apples slices, pomegranite seeds, swath of marshmellow (creme?) with honey, dab of fig sauce? Walnut bread

Pre-dessert (wha? I thought this was a 5-course meal)
- Port poached grapefruit - interesting - slight sweetness on front-end, slight tartness on back
- Champagne jello - champagne flavor definitely comes through
- Barley streussel - pretty sweet
- ate it all, and appreciated the novelness of the flavors, textures, but I'm not quite sure this one succeeded, either separately or combined. Just never really saw each of flavors of the elements making the others better.

Buttermilk Sorbet on top of poundcake, with cranberry consumee
- Ended strong.
- Intriguing - buttermilk sorbet - tastes like buttermilk in sorbet form.
- Cranberry cosnumee - a strong tartness (like cranberries have naturally), "cleansing" was how my better half put it. Yet strangely, I did not like eating the three together, where some of the stronger flavors of each somehow negated one another. For example, eaten together, the poundcake and consumee, made the cranberry taste almost like a Fruit Lifesaver. The sorbet and poundcake, eaten together, covered up on the lovely milky taste of the sorbet.

I can't say that I loved all of the dishes, but I really liked the complexity and wide-range of flavors in each dish. I also appreciated that the chef didn't hold back on offering bold/less familiar flavors (and smells).

We'll return when we can.

(Meal from Feb 2011)

We're always looking for a good (American) brunch place.

Actually. Let me reword that.

My better half is always looking for a nice brunch place. And I'm always hoping against hope that we'll find a brunch place that not only executes their dishes well (which a lot do), but also offers something that is unique and that is hold-onto-your-hat memorable.

I mean I've had cookies, donuts, dimsum, fine dining dinners, and seafood shack lunches, which all are on my conversation instant-recall when anyone unknowingly stumbles into their respective topic. But really nothing comes to mind, when it comes to brunch.

Umm, and certainly after our brunch at Highland Bakery, I'll still be searching. (Edit: This Chowhound thread looks like it may come in handy for our search.)

Ricotta Pancakes - Three pancakes with warm blueberry compote

Ick. I was not a fan. The ricotta combined with the cooked blueberries for some reason reminded me of eating a newspaper. Just this confrontingly, bland/neutral flavor. Note that my better half didn't really see what I was talking about.

French toast - Super thick slices of challah bread, topped with seasonal fresh fruit & French cream, with brown sugar butter on the side.

Dry. Perhaps due to the thickness, certain areas of the slides didn't get covered with egg at all. Then put the slices over heat and certain portions of the bread just get really, really dry.

I give them some points for the sauce, not being overly sweet, but I had to completely dunk certain portions of the french toast in the sauce to avoid the moisture in my mouth from being sucked out.

Certainly far from an enjoyable french toast.

Decently cooked. Nothing to complain about.
Chocolate chip cookie
I like the sizes of cookies - like the diameter and the thickness. The walnuts and to a lesser extent the sugar stole most of the flavor. Meaning that it wasn't as bad as tasting candied walnuts, but it was actually difficult to taste the chocolate chips or the cookie dough.

We mistakenly turned into this plaza, thinking that this was where Ham Heung Nam Myn was located and got lured in by the description: Boulangerie, Patisserie.

It had a logo that I swore was a rip-off of 7-Eleven (but unfortunately didn't bother to take a photo).

Not quite sure what to make of this place. It seems like it is going for the late night modern wine bar/coffee shop with snacks (steamed dumplings, ramen bowls).

3 chocolate cake

Kind of a standard tasting chocolate mousse cake. Not memorable.

Croissant
Oof. Yeah, it's clear the bakers have never tasted what a real croissant should be like. Like one of the more miserable American grocery store versions.

Perhaps their more Asian offerings are better. But we'll probably never stop by again, particularly after that atrocious croissant.

The frames contain old movie posters and photos, which came across as quite endearing, as if the owner was just a big movie fan, had collected all of this stuff and wanted to share their love with the customers. (As opposed to some jaded/calculated business decision for the theme of the restaurant).

We also dug the metal barrels that supported the tables. For some reason, I could imagine that there were/are some sort of those fast/cheap/casual chow stands in Asia that do this.

I don't have pictures, but there are also some free-standing curtains that can be pulled out between some of the side tables to provide some separation between tables.
Pork soup
On their Korean only menu (we asked - we don't read/speak Korean). We got the medium, which we think was more than enough for two.

We loved it. The combination of the spicy peppercorns, which have the lengthy spicy flavor, with the prolonged deliciousness of slow-cooked pork stock was just marvelous.
Besides the wheat buns, which was actually somewhat satisfying, it was surprising how fast-foodish the burgers came across. i.e. maybe a half step above something like Five Guys.

I'm largely putting it here for my own posterity's sake. The notes below are pretty scarce and my memory is shot, so it's largely an incomplete writeup.

However, the overall gist was that we were both disappointed by Chef Liu's.

We got take-out the first time and tried it again for their non-dim-sum breakfast.
Steamed pork buns
I'm not sure, but something was really quite off-putting about the buns and the meat. It wasn't quite as bad as frozen buns from a super-market, but it certainly did not have the bounce and joy of a fresh hand-made ones either.

Atlantans, what the heck is up with valet parking at restaurants? Are customers really that lazy? Or is it that restaurateurs getting their friends a little extra money on the side? Either way it's bloody annoying. I can walk the 20 feet to the door of the restaurant, thank you very much.

Anyways, Thumbs Up Diner. We were looking to try out some Southern diner food, so we made our way down to the location of Thumb's Up Diner, near the Georgia Tech campus.

Admittedly, the windowless red brick side of the building made me feel like we were entering a strip club or a dive bar... And it was 1pm on a Saturday.

Chicken and waffle
I was pretty hungry walking in and was rather dismayed at how minuscule the portions looked. However, strangely, this turned out to be quite filling, which made me wonder just how much butter/lard went into this.

The fried chicken breast meat was a bit overcooked and slightly tough/dry. The scrambled eggs had some cheddar cheese melted through, but otherwise it was your standard rendition. I opted for a buckwheat waffle, which fortunately was not too dense as my stomach was getting full from just the eggs and chicken.
Fried catfish
Fried catfish decent in a comfort food sort of way: familiar but not memorable. Grits were pretty tasty, although my better half thought it was overly salty (which is strange, since it's usually the other way around). The biscuit was dense, but surprisingly (to me at least) did not have an overly buttery flavor.

This was a bit of a de-energizing meal. Things were okay, but not really jumped out.
