Bakeries in San Francisco

Chowhound's extensive discussion on Bakeries in San Fran
(For the clueless like me, a few definitions:)
  • Princess Cake (Prinsesstårta) - a Swedish (!) cake layered with sponge cake, whipped cream, and custard under a green marzipan coating with powdered sugar on the top; often decorated with a pink marzipan rose. (Wikipedia's Cuisine of Sweden)
  • Macaron - Essentially like a French pastry Oreo, with meringue like domes as the cookies (Wikipedia's Macaron)
Mentioned in the discussion is the apparently remarkable bakery called Tartine, over which lots of people get their panties all up in a bunch (Lines of up to 45 minutes on the weekends). Even the NYTimes Minimalist, Mark Bittman, has very glowing praise.

Pastries are nice and delicious and all, but if you know me, all I care about are cookies. Chowhound's discussion on cookies is somewhat disappointing in its relative brevity, but it'll do.
