Furia Chalaca : Hartford

I didn't visit on this trip, but I wanted to throw a recommendation out for Furia Chalaca, formerly known as San Marco's, one of my and my gf's favorites in the Hartford area. They serve Peruvian food and all of the dishes we've had are not only quite tasty, but authentic (judging from my trip to Peru a few years ago).

While we haven't come close to tasting all of the dishes, the following are quite good:

Ceviche de Pescado - Fish cooked in limes - this is light, tart and addicitive as it should be. If you've never had ceviche, you're in for a treat.

Roast chicken (Only available Thu-Sun) - Roast chicken done with some Peruvian spices.

Lomo Saltado -Stir fried beef strips w/ onions and tomatoes over french fries. Yum

Aji de Gallina - Shredded chicken with a creamy yellow sauce

It seems that none of the local foodies have picked up on this gem. Everytime we've visited, we've been the sole non Latin American customers there. Fortunately, the owners are quite friendly and have given us great service and dish recommendations in the past.

In terms of atmosphere, this has a familial feel. In January, they had these cute car dashboard trinkets, porcelain angel / Santa Claus figures on a spring, on each table, just a quirky addition that we got a big kick out of. They also usually play Latin American music concert videos on the wall, unless there's a soccer game, in which case they show that and the place gets packed with loud soccer fans.

Now, there are supposedly some authentic Peruvian restaurants on Franklin St in downtown Hartford, like Goal International, and I've yet to try any of them. However, and this may be unfounded, no one I know feels truly comfortable venturing out to that part of town, especially during the night. Furia Chalaca is located in the suburbs and feels a lot safer. So if you're looking for authentic Peruvian food and don't want to head into downtown Hartford, give it a shot. I don't think you'll regret it.
